Záhorie - a diverse land
The name Záhorie originated in the 17thcentury. It comes from the Latin name Processus transmontanus, describing the land behind the Small Carpathians, i.e. “behind the mountains” (Záhorie literally means “behind the mountains”).
The region is located in the Western Slovakia. The area is defined by the state border with Austria in the west, formed by the river Morava; and by the state border with the Czech Republic in the northwest. In the southeast it is enclosed by the Small Carpathians.
Thanks to its favourable geographic location and climatic conditions, Záhorie is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Slovakia.
From the point of view of tourism the region has good conditions for cycling, hiking and water attractions. The region is rich in monuments from the period of the Habsburgs, Pálffys or Habans. There is the unique spa Smrdáky, National Basilica of Slovakia in the town of Šaštín, the largest golf resort in Europe, products with protected designation of origin “skalický trdelník” (spit cake from Skalica) and “skalický rubín” (red wine variety) and many other attractions for all ages.
